Metal Gear Solid 4 Online Walkthrough
Deathmatch / Team Deathmatch

TDM is the most common chosen game mode. It works on a direct principle: there are two teams, and they have to fight each other. TDM relies on teamwork and cooperation between individual soldiers. It's also entirely combat-based; there are no special objectives or goals here besides destroying your enemies. The main focus here is staying with your team; while it's of course possible to go off by yourself, TDM emphasizes the "team" aspect enough that you should take advantage of it.

Regular deathmatch (DM) works like team deathmatch, but there are no teams. This means that you don't have anyone covering your back, but also that you don't have to worry about friendly fire. Feel free to use lots of traps and grenades, since everyone is your enemy in this mode. However, be aware that you are in general more vulnerable because there's nobody to cover you, and as such you can be flanked from any side.

In both DM and TDM, you get points for kills (more for headshots) and lose points for dying. You get additional points (though less) for stunning enemies. Certain point-garnering actions are exclusive to TDM - specifically, helping out allies by waking them up (more on that later) and using Scanning Plugs on enemy units.
