Zoo Tycoon Walkthrough
Tutorial 3: Making Animals Happy

Part 3 of the tutorial is about all of the extras that help make your zoo a fun place for both people and animals. You start playing with terrain, trees and toys. The toys are key - some animals really need a toy to play with to be content.

Most of the simple animals are easy to make happy. Lions for example can almost always get a 99% or 100% suitable cage. You simply add in plants and rocks one at a time, watching the green smiles, until you hit a red frown. Then you remove that last item! They like a sunny rock or two for that final bit of pleasure.

Other animals are more picky, though. A snowy leopard really likes a SNOW cave, not just a regular cave. So you have to research animal habitats to get the snow cave to make them happy. Flamingos are another creature that people have trouble with. Flamingos are VERY Picky about their environments. First, it has to be big enough, with all the right savannah and water and such. So far so good. But next, they want lots of reeds and tiny rocks. But they don't want to have it interfere with their walking area! So leave the middle of the cage empty and line up all the reeds, squished together, on one side and all the rocks on the other. Where you might only be able to add say 5 reeds if you scattered them around before they started to frown, you could squish in 11 along a wall in a double row which would make them VERY happy, before they thought it was too many.

So don't just think about the count of the objects. Four trees, five rocks. Think about the PLACEMENT of the items too. If a leopard wants lots of room to run around in, putting trees everywhere won't make him happy. But if you make a 'jungle' on one side, and then leave him lots of room to run too, that'll be his ultimate situation.
